Jayhawks Compete at Day Three of ITA Central Regionals

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Kansas’ tandem of sophomore Elizaveta Avdeeva and freshman Ksenia Bukina were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the doubles draw, and Bukina, following a stunning upset of top-seeded Maja Kovacek on Thursday, was also ousted in the second round of the singles bracket on Friday at the ITA Central Regional Championships. The losses eliminate all of Kansas’ tournament qualifiers from any singles or doubles championship contention in Salt Lake City.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Avdeeva and Bukina fell to Nebraska’s duo of Reimens and Skaza, 8-4. In her singles loss, Bukina was toped by Vanessa Huete, also of Nebraska, 6-4; 6-4.

In consolation singles action, following first-round byes, Avdeeva and senior Christine Skoda each notched round two victories, advancing to the quarterfinals. Avdeeva defeated Colorado’s Franziska Jendrian of Colorado, 6-1; 6-2, while Skoda handled WichitaState’s Anaines Exina, 6-1; 6-3.

Avdeeva and Skoda will each compete in the consolation singles quarterfinals on Saturday morning.
