CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Coming off a fourth-place finish in <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Ames, Iowa, Friday, at the Big 12 Relays meet, the University of Kansas swimming team stepped up the competition Saturday in back-to-back action, defeating the University of Northern Iowa Panthers 180-80.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

In the first dual meet action of the 2007-08 season, head coach Clark Campbell and the Jayhawks captured first-place victories in all but one race in the Wellness & RecreationCenter on the UNI campus. Panther sophomore Amanda Firman walked away with a 50-yard freestyle (24.93) victory.

Freshman Joy Bunting led the way for the Jayhawks, recording her first collegiate, dual meet victories in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:07.25) and 200-yard IM (2:08.85). Also making her college debut appearance was freshman Brittany Potter, recording a time of 2:09.81 in the 200-yard butterfly, good for a first-place finish.

Sophomore Emily Lanteigne captured first in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:39.72), in addition to the 500-yard freestyle victory (5:09.16), stacking 18 individual points for the Jayhawks.

Also contributing 18 individual points towards the Kansas victory was senior Terri Schramka, winner of the 100-yard freestyle (53.47) and the 100-yard backstroke (58.43) and member of the first-place 200-yard medley and free relays.

Ashley Leidigh, 100-yard butterfly (57.92)

Rhynn Malloy, 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.49)

The Jayhawks will next be in action when they host the Missouri Tigers October 26. The Border Showdown, sponsored by Midwest Ford dealers, is set to kick off at 6 p.m. at Robinson Natatorium.
