Oct. 21, 2008

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Junior forward Shannon McCabe has been named the Big 12’s Offensive Player of the Week, for the week of Oct. 21. This marks the first time the Kansas junior has been selected for a weekly conference award, and the third different Jayhawk to earn one this season.

McCabe, a junior from Tulsa, Okla., scored four goals and added an assist in matches against No. 6 Texas A&M and Francis Marion this past weekend. The junior scored the only goal of the match in KU’s 1-0 upset of the sixth-ranked Aggies in the 29th minute Friday. On Sunday, she tied a school record with three goals and seven points in the 7-0 win over Francis Marion. McCabe recorded the sixth hat trick in program history, scoring three of the team’s first four goals and adding an assist in the second half.

She becomes the first Jayhawk to be named Offensive Player of the Week by the Big 12 since Jessica Bush received the honor on Oct. 15, 2006.

McCabe joins teammates Emily Cressy (Newcomer of the Week: Aug. 26, Sept. 23) and Estelle Johnson (Defensive Player of the Week: Aug. 26) as the other Jayhawks to be recognized by the conference this season.

Kansas (10-5-1, 3-3-1 Big 12) will host No. 10 Texas at 3 p.m. Friday at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.
