Oct. 21, 2010

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Team Crimson rallied for three runs over the final three innings but it was too late as Team Blue edged the Red 4-3 Wednesday afternoon in Kansas softball’s intrasquad scrimmage at Arrocha Ballpark.

Sophomore Rosie Hull led Blue going 3-for-4 at the plate, including a double, to help drive in two runs while also scoring a run herself. Freshman Colleen Hohman went 2-for-3 during the contest and also tallied a run.

Junior Marissa Ingle got things going for Blue in the first inning with a single that scored Hull. In the next frame, sophomore Mariah Montgomery hit an RBI single to plate senior Leah Daiber and put Blue up 2-0. Hull’s two-run double in the bottom of the third provided Blue’s last runs of the contest.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Crimson finally responded with its first two runs of the game on a senior Allie Clark home run. Junior Kelsey Alsdorf hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to score senior Brittany Hile and bring Crimson within one but it could not muster the tying tally.

Freshman Ashley Newman finished 3-for-5 in the batter’s box for Crimson and was the only Crimson player with multiple hits.

Junior transfer Ashley Spencer pitched the first four innings for Blue to record the win. She allowed just one hit and struck out four batters before Hohman entered the contest for the final three frames. Hohman gave up all three Crimson runs on five hits.

Freshman pitcher Kristin Martinez suffered the loss for Crimson giving up four runs, three of which were earned. Senior Allie Clark tossed the last three innings of scoreless relief, fanning four players and giving up one hit.
