Avdeeva and Horvath Capture Doubles Title at ITA Central Regionals

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>TULSA, Okla. – The University of Kansas’ doubles tandem of junior Elizaveta Avdeeva and sophomore Edina Horvath won the championship of the doubles draw on Sunday, concluding a very successful weekend for the Jayhawks at the ITA Central Region Championships in Tulsa, Okla.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

With their doubles title, Avdeeva and Horvath are now eligible for selection into the National Collegiate Indoor Fall Championships. The ITA will choose between KU’s duo and the winner of the doubles bracket from the Utah site of the ITA Regional Championships.

Avdeeva and Horvath opened the day by handling Arkansas’ top-seeded team of Bordeleau and Kaluder, 8-1, and then defeated Airepetion and Franco, also from Arkansas, 8-3 in the final.

The duo cruised through the entire tournament, winning their matches en-route the winning the championship by a combined score of 48-19.

They were two of Kansas’ top doubles performers last year, although they rarely played together. Avdeeva posted a team-high 20 doubles victories with teammate Ksenia Bukina in the 2006 spring season, while Horvath paired with junior Lauren Hommell to win 16 matches.

Avdeeva also had a strong tournament in singles play, advancing to the quarterfinals of the main draw. The Obninsk, Russia, native entered the event as the brackets fifth seed.

Should Avdeeva and Horvath be selected to compete at the Indoor Championships, they will head to the campus of OhioStateUniversity for the three-day tournament, which is set to begin on Nov. 2.
