Senior midfielder Emily Strinden has been named the recipient of the Chick-Fil-A Community of Champions Award presented by the Big 12 Conference for the week of Oct. 22. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Strinden, a senior captain from <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Lufkin, Texas, was awarded this honor for her work in the community as well as on the soccer field. The 5-foot-5 midfielder volunteers her time with area elementary school kids as part of the Fun and Fitness with Jayhawks. She has participated in the Adopt-an-Angel program, which adopted children for the holidays by buying them gifts on their wish lists in conjunction with HaskellIndianNationsUniversity. Strinden has also been involved with the Habitat for Humanity program in Lawrence.
On the field, Strinden has appeared in 15 of KU’s 17 contests this year and has recorded a goal and an assist. She’s played in 64 matches throughout her four seasons in the Crimson and Blue and has four goals and four assists, including a game-winning goal against Alabama in overtime in 2006.
“Emily has been a great leader for us, not only this year but throughout her career,” Kansas head coach Mark Francis said. “She has a tremendous work ethic and always looks out for the best interest of her teammates. She’s been a great role model for a lot of the younger players on the team.”
Chick-Fil-A and the Big 12 recognize 36 student-athletes each year (three from each Big 12 school) for their outstanding contributions to community efforts. Nominated by each school, the first 12 Community of Champions recipients will also be acknowledged at the Dr. Pepper Big 12 Football Championship Game, as Chick-Fil-A makes another donation to the general scholarship fund of every Big 12 institution for supporting community involvement amongst its student-athletes.
Strinden will be featured on this week’s Big 12 Showcase, which airs on Fox Sports Net (Channel 37 on Sunflower Broadband) on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and Saturday at 1:30 a.m.
Strinden and the Jayhawks will play host to conference rivals Nebraska and IowaState this weekend at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex. KU faces the Huskers at 3 p.m. Friday afternoon before a 1 p.m. contest against the Cyclones on Sunday.
