Oct. 22, 2008

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas swimming and diving returns home following a successful season-opening trip to No. 20 Arizona State and Northern Arizona. The 2-0 Jayhawks will host No. 9 Texas A&M Thursday, Oct., 23 at 6 p.m. at Robinson Natatorium. Missouri will also compete at the meet, however, its times will only be scored against Texas A&M’s. Kansas will then host all of the Big 12 teams Friday, Oct., 24 for the Big 12 Relays, scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.

Texas A&M is the two-time defending Conference Champion. Last year, the Aggies placed fifth at the NCAA Championships and recorded a 9-1 dual meet record. Texas A&M will be scored against Kansas and Missouri, however Kansas and Missouri will not be scored against each other in Thursday’s triangular meet.

“A&M is one of the best teams in the country,” said Kansas head coach Clark Campbell. ” They’re the Big 12 Champions. It is always a privilege to host them and compete against them.”

In addition to the competition among the women’s team, both Missouri and Texas A&M men’s teams will compete in a dual against one another.

On Friday, Kansas will host the Big 12 Relays. Last year, Kansas placed fourth with 56 points at the Relays. Texas A&M won the event with 117 points. The event is divided into two sessions, a 9 a.m. session and 1 p.m. session. In addition to the competition, teams will be wearing pink swim caps for breast cancer awareness. The funds raised will go to support the KU Cancer Center and Lawrence Memorial Hospital Oncology Center.

“The Big 12 Relays are a fun meet,” said Campbell. “It doesn’t go on our dual meet record. We just want to go out there and have a good time competing.”

Following this week’s competition, the Jayhawks will be back in action Saturday, Nov., 1 at Missouri. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Kansas’ next home dual is Nov., 7 against Drury, scheduled for 6 p.m.
