Tennis Competes in Home Tournament, Regional Championships
Oct. 23, 2010
LAWRENCE, Kan. — Both doubles teams won their respective matches, Friday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Facility, as Kansas doubles teams reigned supreme once again in the KU Invitational. Much like the last tournament the Jayhawks participated in, Notre Dame’s Eck Classic, KU won both doubles matches in the first day of the three-day event.
Paulina Los and Dylan Windom teamed to go 1-1 in the Blue Draw against teams from Iowa and Oklahoma. Victoria Khanevskaya and Kate Goff picked up an 8-4 win against a team from Wichita State and downed a UMKC doubles team 8-2 in the Red Draw.
Khanevskaya built on her team-leading singles record with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Kansas State’s Alina Piotrowski in the White Draw. However, the rest of the team struggled in singles Friday, as Los, Windom and Pezzotti all fell in their respective singles matches.
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Ekaterina Morozova and Erin Wilbert paced the Jayhawks in the first day of play in the ITA/USTA Regional Championships Friday, with a doubles win in the round of 64.
Morozova and Wilbert were the only Jayhawks to earn wins at Arkansas’ Billingsley Tennis Center, with Wilbert also getting a singles win in the qualifying draw consolation bracket. In the first round of the main doubles draw, Morozova and Wilbert defeated Hailee and Mia Elmore of Saint Louis, 6-2.
But in the round of 32, KU’s top doubles duo were downed 8-5 by a team from Tulsa.
Monica Pezzotti and Sara Lazarevic were also defeated, falling 8-3 to Saint Louis’ Casey Miller and Jenny Nalepa.
In singles play, Wilbert received a bye in the first round but fell in her first match of the qualifying draw. But Wilber bounced back with 6-4, 6-1 win in the consolation bracket, and will continue play in the draw Saturday.
Pezzotti, Lazarevic and Morozova all played out of the main draw. Pezzotti was defeated 6-1, 6-1 by Kelsey Sundaram from Arkansas. Lazarevic fought a tough three-set battle but couldn’t hang on in the third set against Oklahoma State’s Sasha Belova, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Morozova fell to Anouk Tigu of Arkansas, 7-6 (1) 6-4.
