Jarmoc Named Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week

LAWRENCE, Kan. – A dominant pair of performances played witness to redshirt junior Caroline Jarmoc setting career-highs in blocks one match and kills the next, to earn the Kansas middle blocker American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Player of the Week honors, Tuesday afternoon.
Jarmoc was brilliant both offensively and defensively to guide Kansas to victories over then-No. 14 Kansas State on Oct. 17 and TCU on Oct. 20. The wins propelled the Jayhawks (19-3, 7-1 Big 12) to a program-best No. 8 RPI mark and to No. 17 in the AVCA Division I Coaches poll. Her efforts resulted in a Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honor on Monday, making her eligible for the national award.
The AVCA National Player of the Week honor is the first for Jarmoc, the third in Kansas history and marks the first national honoree for the Jayhawks since Karina Garlington was named on Nov. 11, 2008.
“It’s a huge honor to be recognized like this,” Jarmoc said. “I didn’t even know there was a national player of the week or anything like that, but to be recognized by something even bigger than your conference is awesome. It’s great to be recognized, but it won’t change the way I play. We have a team mindset and I just want to help my team go as far as we can.”
With the Wildcats and Jayhawks squaring off as ranked teams for the first time in their storied history, Jarmoc shined at the net. She posted a career-high 12 blocks en route to her first career double-double (11 kills/12 blocks) as KU out-blocked the Wildcats, 18-5.
Against TCU, in the Horned Frogs’ first visit to Lawrence as members of the Big 12, Jarmoc put up four more blocks but it was her potent offense that put the match away. The Calgary, Alberta native drilled 23 kills – eight in the fourth set alone – to set her new career high. After collecting four kills and four errors in the opening frame against TCU, Jarmoc bounced back for 19 kills and no errors for the remainder of the match. Aside from her career-high 23 kills, she hit .613 for the match, the 10th time this season Jarmoc has hit over .500.
Jarmoc finished the week with 34 kills (4.25 kps) and 16 blocks (2.00 bps). She leads the Big 12 lead in attack percentage (.396) and is fourth in the league in blocks per set (1.34).
At Kansas, she became just the fifth player in history to surpass 200 kills and 100 blocks in three different seasons during the Jayhawks’ victory over rival Kansas State.
