Kansas to Conclude Fall Season at Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate

Oct. 24, 2010

After finishing a season-best second place at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate last week, Kansas’ men’s golf team looks to end their fall season on a strong note when it competes in the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Lac Cruces, N.M. Oct. 25-26. Prior to the Bill Ross Intercollegiate, the Jayhawks placed third at the Colorado Invitational, making their two most recent tournaments their best tournaments as well.

Not surprisingly, head coach Kit Grove will stick with the same lineup that earned second-place honors last week. This lineup includes senior Nate Barbee, the individual winner of last week’s tournament with a score of 213. Barbee is the first Jayhawk to accomplish such a feat this year. He had also been the most recent Jayhawk to earn a victory, winning the 2009 Kansas Invitational.

Joining Barbee are sophomores Chris Gilbert and Alex Gutesha, who both finished in a tie for 23rd among individuals in last week’s tournament. Junior Doug Quinones ended last week tied for 28th and will make the trip to New Mexico as well. Rounding out the lineup for the Jayhawks is senior Jeff Bell who finished last week tied for 37th among individuals. Bell is competing in his third tournament of the season and was the individual leader for Kansas at the Colorado Invitational.

Barbee’s score of 213 last week marks the best 54-hole score anybody on KU has put up this season. Bell’s 216 at the Colorado Invitational was the best score prior. Last week’s tournament also marked the second time this season that Kansas had three or more individuals place in the top 25. Four individuals finished in the top 25 at the Colorado Invitational.

Joining Kansas at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate are host New Mexico State, Air Force, Boise State, Idaho, Illinois State, Nebraska, Texas State, UNLV, Utah, UTEP, Washington State, Weber State, Western New Mexico, and Wichita State. Results can be accessed on golfstat.com or at kuathletics.com.
