14 KU Runners Named Academic All-Big 12

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The Big 12 Conference has named the 2005 Cross Country Academic All-Big 12 teams the league office announced on Tuesday. The Jayhawks placed 14 on the list, led by sophomore Nick Brennan who has a 4.0 GPA.

The women’s team had five members named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, including Connie Abbott, Hayley Harbert, Laura Major, Melissa Moody and Dena Seibel. Christine Lathrop and Alicia McGregor were named to the second team.

In addition to Brennan, the men’s first team Academic All-Big 12 included Paul Hefferon, Joshy Madathil, Brennan Metzler, Cameron Schwehr and Erik Sloan. Tyler Kelly represented KU on the second team.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Baylor will host the Big 12 Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 28, at Bear Run Cross Country Course in Waco, Texas. The men’s 8k race will begin at 10 a.m. CT, followed by the women’s 6k run at 11 a.m. The top men’s and women’s teams will be crowned league champion and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. The top 15 individuals in each race will be named all-conference.
