Jayhawks Conclude Intrasquad World Series With Halloween Theme

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Sporting new seasonal uniforms, Kansas softball held the final game of its intrasquad world series Friday afternoon dressed in Halloween-themed uniforms as Blue defeated Crimson 8-3.

Junior transfer Ashley Spencer pitched the first four innings for Blue to record the win. She allowed just two hits and one walk while fanning five batters before sophomore Alex Jones entered the game for the final three innings to record a save. Jones gave up Crimson’s three runs, two earned, on three hits to go along with two strikeouts.

Blue’s offense rallied behind its pitchers’ strong performances scattering eight runs over four innings off 15 hits. Sophomore Rosie Hull and freshman Colleen Hohman each had three hits for Blue. Junior Leah Daiber and sophomore Mariah Montgomery added two hits apiece. Daiber also added a team-high three RBI.

Montgomery plated Blue’s first run in the top of the third inning, while Daiber’s home run in the fourth added another tally. Daiber then combined with Hohman in the fifth to plate three more runs to give Blue a commanding 5-0 lead. Another three-run inning in the sixth concluded the team’s scoring.

Freshman Kendra Cullum provided Crimson with its first run in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single, while her double in the seventh brought home another run. Senior Brittany Hile also scored for Crimson with a solo homer in the sixth.

Hohman earned Offensive MVP honors during the series going 8-for-11 in three games, including two home runs and two doubles to help drive in six runs. Spencer was named Defensive MVP. The right-handed pitcher gave up just one earned run on seven hits in 11 innings of work. She also had 10 strikeouts.
