Fall Ball Weekend Wrap-up

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The University of Kansas baseball team participated in three scrimmages over the weekend at Hoglund Ballpark as a part of fall practices, with the Red Team continuing its strong play winning all three days and sweeping the Blue Team.

Game One Recap (Friday — Oct. 22)
The Red Team erupted for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to post a 6-4 win over the Blue Team.

Junior left-handed pitcher Travis Gosset had a solid outing for the Blue Team, throwing five innings and allowing only one run on six hits, while striking out three. The Red Team was able to knock around senior reliever Scott Sharpe in the seventh with RBI hits from junior infielder Jared Schweitzer, freshman infielder Erik Morrison, junior shortstop Ritchie Price and senior infielder Andy Scholl.

Red Team freshman outfielder John Allman continued his hot hitting this fall with three singles and a stolen base, while Schweitzer and senior catcher Sean Richardson each collected two hits in the contest.

Freshman outfielder Brock Simpson paced the Blue Team with two hits, including a double. Junior outfielder Marcus Howard and senior infielder Mike Dudley each had RBI doubles for the Blue Team during the scrimmage.

Game Two Recap (Saturday — Oct. 23)
In a match-up of projected weekend starters for the Jayhawks, senior left-handed pitcher Mike Zagurski outpitched junior right-handed pitcher Kodiak Quick to lead the Red Team to a 7-3 victory.

Zagurski threw six innings and allowed three runs on six hits and struck out five, while Quick pitched six innings for the Blue Team and allowed seven runs on 11 hits and had five strikeouts.

The Blue Team took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third, after freshman outfielder Nick Faunce doubled and freshman outfielder John Allman hit his first home run of the fall. The Red Team rallied in the bottom of the inning to recapture the lead at 3-2. In the frame, sophomore outfielder Derek Bailey and freshman outfielder Brock Simpson reached on singles and scored on a two-run single by shortstop Ritchie Price.

The Blue Team tied the game in the top of the fourth inning on a two-out home run by Richardson, but the Red Team took complete control of the game with a four-run bottom of the fourth. Infielder Justin Ellerich, Simpson, and Ritchie Price all collected RBI hits in the inning. Price finished the game with three hits and three RBI and Simpson added two hits and an RBI to pace the Red Team at the plate.

Freshman outfielder Nick Faunce collected two hits, including a double for the Blue Team.

Game Three Recap (Sunday — Oct. 24)
The Red Team completed the three-game sweep of the weekend series by pounding the Blue Team 16-3 on Sunday. Pitcher Logan Murphy picked up the win for the Red Team, pitching six innings, allowing four hits and one run, while striking out three. Senior relief pitchers Brandon Johnson and Michael Fitch each pitched a scoreless inning in support of Murphy.

For the Blue Team, senior left-handed pitcher Scott Sharp was tagged with the loss. The Stilwell, Kan., native, gave up six runs on eight hits in four innings of work. The Red Team also tagged projected spring starter Clint Schambach for five runs during the contest.

The Red Team got a two-run home run off the bat of junior outfielder A.J. Van Slyke, who had two hits and three RBI on the day. Also leading the charge at the plate was junior infielder Jared Schweitzer, who collected three hits, and junior shortstop Ritchie Price, who posted three hits, including a triple and two RBI. Junior outfielder Gus Milner had his best day of the fall with driving in two runs on four hits, including two triples.

Kansas baseball will wrap up fall practice this weekend with a “West vs. Midwest” series at Hoglund Ballpark. The team will scrimmage at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
