LAWRENCE, Kan. – Senior forward Carolyn Davis returned from a knee injury that kept her out of the last 20 games of the 2011-12 season, as the Jayhawks kicked off their 2012-13 season with a 57-35 exhibition win over Washburn, Sunday afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse.

Davis scored eight points on 4-of-8 shooting and added eight rebounds in 15 first-half minutes for ninth-year Kansas women’s basketball head coach Bonnie Henrickson.

In addition to Davis, seniors Angel Goodrich, Monica Engelman and sophomores Bunny Williams and Natalie Knight rounded out the starting lineup for Kansas. Newcomers Lamaria Cole and Markisha Hawkins played their first games in the Crimson and Blue, combining for 11 total minutes.

Goodrich and Knight led the Kansas offense, both totaling 11 points for the game. Goodrich also added six assists, five rebounds and six steals in 34 minutes for the Jayhawks.

Washburn was led by senior forward Tiara George, who had 10 points (5-of-11), 12 rebounds and four blocks in 27 minutes for the Lady Blues.

Davis put in a layup a little more than two minutes into the game to give the Jayhawks their first basket of the season, with 18:44 left to play in the first half. Kansas used strong defense to build a 14-point halftime lead, 31-17. The Jayhawks held the Lady Blues to 28 percent (8-of-29) shooting, had 11 steals and forced 18 turnovers.

Knight opened up the second half with a shot from the corner to extend the Kansas lead to 16 points with just over 19 minutes to play. Washburn would respond with a 9-0 run to cut the Kansas lead to seven, 33-26, and force a timeout by Henrickson. Her team answered, and a layup by sophomore guard Asia Boyd extended the Jayhawk lead back to double-digits, 37-28, heading into the under 12 timeout. KU would cruise the rest of the way, leading by as many as 22 points, behind another solid defensive effort that held Washburn to 27 percent (7-of-26) shooting in the half. Boyd led the Jayhawk offense in the second half, with eight points on 4-of-7 shooting.

The Jayhawks dominated in the paint, outscoring the Lady Blues 40-18 inside and were able to capitalize on 29 Washburn turnovers, turning them into 28 points.

The win for Kansas gives the Jayhawks a 40-9 record in exhibition contests and a 5-0 ledger in exhibition contests against the Lady Blues.

The Jayhawks will play one more tune-up before the official start of the 2012-13 regular season, next Sunday, Nov. 4, when they take on Fort Hays State at 2 p.m. in Allen Fieldhouse.
