Jayhawks Finish 15th at Derby Invitational to Conclude Fall Season

The <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Kansas women’s golf team moved up one spot to finish in 15th place (17-team field) after Sunday’s final round of The Derby Invitational. Kansas concluded the 36-hole tournament, which took place at the Auburn University Club (par 72, 6,310 yards), with a total score of 636 (327-309).

The Jayhawks improved their final-round score by 18 strokes from the first round to finish just one stroke ahead of 16th place Mississippi State. They also finished 18 strokes ahead of Big 12 Conference rival Texas who finished in 17th place.

Host Auburn took the team crown with a total score of 594, while Alabama finished in second place with 606. Auburn’s Marisa Milligan finished in the top spot individually with 145 strokes.

Senior Amanda Costner led the way for the Jayhawks to finish in a tie for 39th place with a final round score of 77 for a total score of 156 (79-77). Freshman Emily Powers moved from a tie for 72nd place to a tie for 58th place with a 76 in the final round for a total 158 strokes (82-76).

Junior Annie Giangrosso and freshman Meghan Gockel both tied for 75th place with a total score of 161. Giangrosso shot an 81 in the final round, while Gockel carded a 75 – the lowest one-round score of the Jayhawks throughout the tournament.

Senior Jill Womble placed 89th with an 86 in the final round for a total score of 174.

The Jayhawks will break from competition until the start of the spring season at the Baja Invitational in Ensenada, Mexico, Feb. 5-6. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
