Kansas Cross County Teams Capture Seventh at Big 12 Championships

The Jayhawk cross country teams both captured seventh place overall at the 2010 Big 12 Cross Country Championships in Stillwater, Okla., on Saturday, Oct. 30. Junior Rebeka Stowe led the women’s team with a 12th-place overall finish. On the men’s side, Junior Donny Wasinger was Kansas’ No. 1 runner for the fourth time this season, capturing 13th overall.

Stowe crossed the finish line in 20:43.44 in a competitive field of 105 runners. She has now finished in the top 20 in every meet of her junior campaign. Sophomore Natalie Becker, who competed for the first time at the Big 12 Championships, finished as Kansas’ No. 2 runner, placing 39h overall and clocking a 6K time of 21:41.64.

Senior Amanda Miller also had an impressive race, as she finished 50th overall with a 6K time of 21:53.93, a 42 second improvement from last year. Right behind Miller, were sophomores Allie Marquis and Tessa Turcotte, who took 51st and 52nd places, finishing within seconds apart.

Junior Kara Windisch and sophomore Kyra Kilwein were next to cross the finish line for Kansas, as Windisch posted a 6K time of 22:07.22 and Kilwein ran a 22:17.4.

Donny Wasinger paced the men, as he has done in each of the four previous meets this season. The sophomore from Winona, Minn., placed 13th overall, which is 25 spot improvement from the 2009 Big 12 Championships, and finished with an 8K time of 24:40.04.

Senior Nick Caprario was next to cross the finish line, as he ran a career-best 8K time of 25:17.02 to take 28th place.

Junior Austin Bussing was the Jayhawks’ No. 3 finisher and took 48th place overall with an impressive 8K time of 25:48.96. He was followed by sophomore Josh Baden, who placed 49th with an 8K time of 25:52.99.

Freshmen Jose Luis Munoz and Josh Munsch came in 62nd and 66th, respectively, with Munoz posting an 8K time of 26:34.59 and Munsch clocking in at 26:40.07.

Freshman Nikki Trooien-Smith placed 77th at his first Big 12 appearance, posting an 8K time of 27:40.19.

The Jayhawks will vie for a bid to nationals when they return to action on Nov. 13 with the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in Peoria, Ill.
