Jayhawks Garner 11 Academic All-Conference Selections

DALLAS –

The University of Kansas placed 11 student-athletes on the Big 12’s Academic All-Conference team Tuesday, including seven on the First Team.

KU seniors Nikki Alvarez, Holly Gault and Michelle Rasmussen, juniors Nicole Cauzillo and Afton Sauer as well as sophomores Kristin Graves and Jenny Murtaugh were all selected First Team Academic All-Big 12, while Missy Geha, Julie Hanley, Sara Rogers and Emily Strinden were selected to the Second Team.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

The soccer academic all-league squad consisted of 67 first team members combined with 21 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

Alvarez was selected Academic All-Big 12 for the third time in her career, while Cauzillo, Gault, Rasmussen and Strinden are all repeat selections from last year’s squad.

KU (11-7) will play Colorado in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Championship Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., at Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.
