KU Falls to Nebraska, 3-1, in First Round of Big 12 Championship

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Despite out-shooting Nebraska, 9-5, in the second half, the University of Kansas could not overcome two first half goals and fell, 3-1, to the Cornhuskers, Wednesday in the first round of the Big 12 Championship.

NU freshman Aysha Jamani scored her seventh goal on the season when she beat a KU defender and fired her shot from 10-yards out past Jayhawk goalkeeper Julie Hanley. The goal came at the 12 minute mark of the match.

Sophomore Jessie Bruch gave NU a two goal lead 26:46 into the match. Brittany Timko, the 2004 and 2005 Big 12 Player of the Year, placed a Husker corner kick 10 yards in front of the goal. Bruch rose above the crowd and headed the ball into the net.

Timko gave the Huskers a 3-0 lead with her 10th goal of the season with under nine minutes remaining in the match. Before Timko’s goal, the Jayhawks fired two shots off the cross bar in the second half that could of tied the match.

Caroline Smith got the Jayhawks on the scoreboard with 4:08 remaining in the match. Smith lobbed a shot from 12-yards out over NU’s goalkeeper Jamie Klages. The goal was the seniors 51st of her career.

Hanley made seven saves in the match to Klages five. Caroline Smith and Michelle Rasmussen led KU’s offense with five and four shots, respectively.

The Jayhawks will find out their NCAA fate during the tournament selection show on Monday, Nov. 7. The brackets will be revealed on ESPNews between 4-4:30 p.m. CST.
