LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas swimming and diving team leads the University of Northern Iowa Panthers after day one of the two-day competition. The Jayhawks returned to Lawrence amongst a full house at Robinson Natatorium Friday to race the Panthers in their first of only two home-meets this season.

The purpose of the two-day meet with the Panthers is to prepare the Jayhawks for a championship meet set-up, which includes preliminary and final events. After racing today, Kansas and Northern Iowa will meet again Saturday to compete in the 14 remaining events.

Kansas finished first, second and third in six of the eight events completed on day one of the meet, but recorded first place victories in the remaining two events.

Junior Terri Schramka (4:59.01), senior Lia Pogioli (5:00.12) and freshman Ashley Robinson (5:04.49) finished first, second and third, respectively, in the 500-yard freestyle.

In diving action, senior Shelby Noonan led the Jayhawks with a first place finish on the three-meter board with a score of 323.26. Close behind were Kansas divers junior Jenny Roberts, freshman Meghan Proehl, sophomore Hannah McMacken and freshman Allison Ho, who rounded out the top-five finishes.

Sophomore Ashley Leidigh captured a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.22, while senior Tricia Tindall was not far behind with a time of 58.87, good for a second-place finish.

For the second dual meet this season, junior Lauren Bonfe captured honors in the 100-yard backstroke (57.17). Bonfe, who broke a Nebraska-Omaha pool record in the 100-yard backstroke on Oct. 14, swam a season-best time in the event Friday.

Rounding out the day for the Jayhawks was sophomore Rhynn Malloy, sophomore Maria Mayrovich and sophomore Danielle Herrmann, who captured first place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard IM, respectively.

The Jayhawks and Panthers will take to the water again Saturday at 10 a.m. at Robinson Natatorium. Complete results following the dual can be found on kuathletics.com.
