Kansas Tops Nebraska-Omaha in Saturday Swimming Action

LAWRENCE, Kan. – In the Saturday morning dual meet action between the University of Kansas and University of Nebraska-Omaha swimming teams, Kansas swept all events, finishing first, second and third in all races except three for a 153-67 victory over the Mavericks in Robinson Natatorium. <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Kansas moves to 2-2 in dual meet competition and 0-1 in Big 12 swimming and diving action.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

While swimmers from both teams faced a condensed meet format, consisting of shorter, sprint races, Kansas divers took part in two intrasquad diving exhibition competitions.

“It was great to lighten it up a little,” diving coach Eric Elliott said of the intrasquad competition. “We had the opportunity to practice some dives on all boards, including the platform, so we are prepared when we face some tough competition in a couple of weeks at the Houston Diving Invitational.”

In swimming action, head coach Clark Campbell was impressed with the team’s ability to swim with enthusiasm and energy at an early morning meet.

“With our team, we have talked about making the most of every race, and this morning, we had the opportunity to race,” Campbell said. “It’s important to have morning meets because at Championships, preliminaries begin at 10 in the morning. We talked about some things that we learned against Arkansas last week, and coming out enthused and energetic was one thing I thought we did great today.”

The Jayhawks swept first in every race, but the depth of KU played a part in the victory. Top performances came from junior Rhynn Malloy, who placed second in the 100-yard breast (1:07.67) and 200-yard IM (2:11.16). Sophomore Carrah Haley clocked in at third in the 100-yard back (59.60), while twins Brittany Potter and Alyssa Potter finished first and second for the `Hawks in the 100-yard butterfly, with times of 58.70 and 59.39, respectively. Junior Jessica Brozek rounded out the 100 butterfly competition for Kansas, finishing fourth with a time of 1:00.56.

Senior co-captains Danielle Herrmann and Lauren Bonfe both recorded victories on the day, Herrmann in the 100 (1:04.68) and 50-yard breaststroke (30.13) events and Bonfe in the 50-yard backstroke (27.69). Sophomore Whitney Taylor finished second in the 50 back with a time of 27.91.

Victorious in the 100-yard back (58.75) and 200-yard free (1:53.57) and a member of the winning 200-yard free relay (1:36.89) was Kansas senior Terri Schramka.
