Jayhawk Freshmen Come Out Strong In Exhibition Opener

Nov. 2, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawk freshman showed true poise in their first game in Allen Fieldhouse Wednesday as the Jayhawks defeated the Emporia State Hornets with a final score of 83-61.

Eleven players in Crimson and Blue saw playing time, including five freshmen who did not shy away from making an incredible first impression. Freshman guard Natalie Knight was featured in the starting lineup and lead the team with five assists by the end of the game.

Coach Bonnie Henrickson acknowledged the impact the freshmen had in their first game, but was not surprised in the skill and effort they showed.

“What Bunny (Williams) did for us tonight, she does every day,” said Henrickson. “She is the most physical post player we have.”

Freshmen forward Chelsea Gardner put up five points, two steals and a block in the first half while guard Donielle Breaux turned it on late, scoring seven points in the second half.

Coach Henrickson also acknowledged the aggressive play of guard Asia Boyd, putting up two points, a steal and a block, and commented on Knight’s consistency in the past month leading up to the game.

“She’s been able to guard and she’s been able to get us and keep us in an offense,” said Henrickson. “If your freshman point guard is playing and not turning it over, we can work with that.”

Knight acknowledged the leadership of junior guard Angel Goodrich and what she has done for her to improve at the point guard position.

“Every day in practice she pushes me,” said Knight. “She makes very few mistakes. Knowing that going into practice every day, you know you’ve got to bring it. She’s a great role model for this team.”

In her 21 minutes on the floor, Goodrich dished out four assists, nabbed two steals, and led the Jayhawks in scoring with 16 points.

The Jayhawks will suit up again in their second exhibition game versus the Pittsburg State Gorillas on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 2 p.m. in Allen Fieldhouse.
