Photo Gallery | Gameday BlogWACO, Texas – James Sims ran for 100 yards before halftime and the Kansas defense kept it a one-score game with an extended goalline stand before the break, but Baylor used 21 unanswered points over the last 30 minutes to roll to a 41-14 win at Floyd Casey Stadium Saturday.
James Sims became the first Jayhawk to rush for more than 100 yards in five consecutive games since Laverne Smith in 1974, and the Kansas (1-8, 0-6 Big 12) defense found a way to keep Baylor (4-4, 1-4 Big 12) out of the end zone on the last five drives of the opening half, but couldn’t keep the Bears down after halftime. Baylor broke open a 20-14 contest with 14 points in the third quarter and added another score in the fourth en route to 666 yards of total offense.
On its last true drive of the first half, the Kansas defense saw the ball snapped eight times inside the 20 and six times inside the 10 before Baylor settled for a field goal. The goalline stand kept the Bears within a touchdown headed into halftime and marked the fifth consecutive drive without a touchdown allowed after Baylor rolled up 14 points in the game’s first five minutes.
The drive was an abbreviated version of the first half, as Baylor looked stopped early but charged ahead, only to see the drive stall thanks to the relentless KU defense. Baylor steamed to a two-score lead behind two touchdown passes from Nick Florence – a lob to Terrance Williams on the opening possession and a one-play drive that saw Lache Seastrunk get behind the KU linebackers for a 68-yard catch-and-run. The Bears weren’t without hiccups however, as Greg Brown intercepted Florence in the red zone on the first drive only to see the drive extended because a KU player was lined up in the neutral zone.
Kansas wrapped a pair of touchdowns – a 58-yard run by Sims and a 22-yard run by quarterback Michael Cummings – around two field goals and pulled within a touchdown by halftime thanks to the play of the defensive unit. That’s where KU’s momentum seemed to stop.
Halftime was extended due to a weather delay right before the teams were set to take the field and resumed under rainy conditions nearly an hour after the players first entered the locker room. Baylor held KU scoreless on its first drive out of the break and countered with a four-play, 55-yard scoring drive in a little more than one minute.
Kansas kept looking for success on the ground and rushed for 246 total yards, but Sims was limited to just 19 yards, and the KU offense limited to 102 yards, in the second half. Taylor Cox added 71 yards on the ground and Tony Pierson had 18 yards on just two carries.
Baylor quarterback Nick Florence rushed for a 7-yard touchdown near the end of the third quarter and connected with Tevin Reese on a 40-yard strike early in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Florence ended the game 26-for-42 with 367 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 32 yards. Glasco Martin (157) and Seastrunk (103) each topped 100 yards for Baylor on the ground.
Kansas continues Big 12 Conference play on the road next weekend when the Jayhawks meet Texas Tech for an 11 a.m. CT kickoff in Lubbock, Texas. The game will be televised on FSN.
