Tennis Excels at Day One of WMU Super Challenge

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The University of Kansas tennis team kicked off its final tournament of the fall season successfully on Friday, going a combined 4-0 in doubles play and 3-5 in singles competition at the Western Michigan University Super Challenge.

The Jayhawks began the day with singles action versus Western Michigan and Purdue. Picking up victories for Kansas were freshman Ksenia Bukina, sophomore Lauren Hommell and junior Brittany Brown, all of which coming against the Boilermakers.

Kansas then took to the courts for doubles play with DePaul, and completed a sweep of the Blue Demons. Kansas’ tandems of Bukina and sophomore Elizaveta Avdeeva, Hommell and freshman Edina Horvath, Brown and senior Christine Skoda, and junior Ashley Filberth and sophomore Stephanie Smith all notched wins.

“I thought we had an excellent opening day,” head coach Amy Hall-Holt said. “Everyone played well. Even the matches that we dropped were very close and competitive.”

“It was a great way to start the weekend, and hopefully we can build on this momentum on Saturday.”

The Super Challenge will resume action on Saturday morning with more singles and doubles matches scheduled to take place.
