Nov. 5, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

For the fifth-straight year, Kansas volleyball has placed at least one player on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team. Senior Paige Mazour was named to the District 7 first team, while senior Katie Martincich earned second team honors.

Mazour has maintained a 3.94 cumulative GPA as a human biology major and earns academic all-district honors for the first time in her career. After serving in a reserve role for the Jayhawk volleyball team the past three seasons, Mazour has evolved into a major asset for the KU offense playing middle blocker. A Franklin, Neb., native, Mazour is one of two Jayhawks to start all 23 matches in 2009 and ranks 10th in the Big 12 Conference with a .307 attack percentage.

As a first team all-district honoree, Mazour is now in the running for Academic All-America. The All-America team will be announced on Nov. 23.

Martincich earns her second academic all-district honors having been named to the third team as a sophomore in 2007. A sport management and business marketing double major, Martincich has recorded a 3.98 GPA throughout her college career. The Shawnee, Kan., native came to Kansas as a setter but has since evolved into a defensive specialist for the team. Martincich ranks in the top 10 of KU’s career assists list and is on pace to break into the KU career digs list as well.
