Allen Fieldhouse Named Loudest College Basketball Arena

ESPN The Magazine named Allen Fieldhouse the loudest arena in the country in its Nov. 15, 2010 issue.

The publication first polled a numerous ESPN experts and created a top 10 list of “most boisterous arenas”. It then turned to the Penn State University acoustic program which did research with each universities facility departments. From the article — PSU’s team perused construction data provided by the schools and contractors, then assumed the following to create their models: 1) a capacity crowd of yelling spectators; 2) student fans yelling twice as loudly as others; 3) fan bodies absorbing sound equally at all venues.

The story describes Allen Fieldhouse as “the perfect combo of dimension, students-to-court proximity and low-absorption materials.”

Kansas was one of three Big 12 schools in the top 10 with Kansas State’s Bramlage Coliseum coming in at No. 7 and Oklahoma State’s Gallagher-Iba Arena at No. 9.
