AMES, IOWA – Fueled by 300 total yards from freshman quarterback Jared Barnett and a Zach Guyer field goal with 4:40 remaining, Iowa State slipped past the Kansas Jayhawks 13-10 on Saturday afternoon in front of 51,575 at Jack Trice Stadium.

The loss drops the Jayhawks to 2-7 on the season and 0-6 in the Big 12. Iowa State moves to 5-4 overall with a 2-4 record in league play.

The Jayhawks stayed within arm’s length of the Cyclones throughout the day, never trailing by more than three points. A 10-10 tie with 5:49 left in the third quarter would not be broken until Iowa State senior kicker Zach Guyer kicked the eventual game-winning field goal in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter.

The Jayhawk offense was sharp throughout the day, racking up 174 yards on the ground with freshman Darrian Miller and sophomore James Sims leading the KU rushing attack with 70 yards and 50 yards, respectively. Despite windy conditions, sophomore quarterback Jordan Webb threw for 127 yards on 13-of-21 attempts, hitting sophomore wide receiver D.J. Beshears five times for 45 yards.

ISU quarterback Jared Barnett was the difference for the Cyclones, not only hurting Jayhawks through the air, throwing for 175 yards, but also leading all rushers with 125 yards on the ground.

Despite Barnett’s heroics, the KU defense would have one of their most complete outings of the season. Forcing four fumbles, collecting seven tackles-for-loss and holding Iowa State to just 13 points, the fewest point-total allowed in a conference game under Turner Gill.

ISU turnovers helped keep the Jayhawks in it through the second half. Just out of the halftime locker room, Bradley McDougald picked-off a Jared Barnett pass, the sophomore saftey’s third-career interception. The turnover gave the KU offense prime field position to start their first drive after the intermission; a 14 play, 48-yard march down the field that resulted in a 19-yard Ron Doherty field goal to even the score at 10 midway through the third quarter.

Senior defensive tackle Patrick Dorsey would be the next member of the KU defense to give the Jayhawks a boost. With Iowa State in the middle of a 17 play, 70-yard drive and threatening on the KU 9 yard-line, Dorsey would recover an ISU fumble to give the ball back to KU. The fumble gave the Jayhawk defense their third take-away of the day, matching a season high.

The Jayhawks’ lone touchdown came with 3:15 left in the first quarter. Sophomore wide receiver D.J. Beshears dove into the end zone after breaking free on a 22-yard reverse play. The score gave the Jayhawks a 7-3 lead as they entered the second quarter, their first lead in a game since going up 7-0 on Oklahoma State on Oct. 8.

Kansas will now return home to play host to Baylor on Saturday, November 12. The day will mark the final game in Memorial Stadium for 14 seniors on the KU squad. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m., and can be seen on AT&T Jayhawk All-Access.
