LAWRENCE, Kan. –

No. 23 Kansas (3-2) defeated Division II power Drury Friday evening at Robinson Natatorium 140-88. The University of Kansas swimming and diving team won all but two events. The Jayhawks will host the Evansville Purple Aces tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the team’s last home dual of 2008.

Kansas opened the dual with a 200 yard medley relay victory in a time of 1:44.29. Kansas’ ‘A’ team, comprised of Iuliia Kuzhil, Danielle Herrmann, Ashley Leidigh and Maria Mayrovich bested Drury’s second-place time by 1.4 seconds.

Drury’s Erin Dolan won the 1650 yard freestyle, but freshman Shannon Garlie and senior Molly Brammer took second and third place.

Herrmann led a Jayhawk sweep in the 200 yard freestyle. She won it in a time of 2:02.65. Emily Lanteigne placed second and Anne Liggett earned third place. Lanteigne also delivered a first-place winning time of 5:00.94 in the 500 yard freestyle.

Sophomore Amanda Maez took first place in the 50 yard freestyle in a time of 24.45. Freshman Sarah Hettenbach placed third in the dual’s shortest race.

Like the 200 yard freestyle, the Jayhawks swept the 400 yard IM. Sophomore Joy Bunting led a trio of young Jayhawks in a time of 4:27.59. She was followed by freshman Stephanie Payne and sophomore Alyssa Potter.

On the diving board, Kansas took the top two spots on the 3m board. Erin Mertz won the competition with 325.20 points, while Meghan Proehl took second with 273.15 points. The results were similar on the 1m board, however Proehl and Mertz switched places. Proehl bested Mertz for the top spot with 289.72 points. Mertz placed second with 273.07 points.

Li Tao of Drury won the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 56.43. Kansas’ Leidigh and Brittany Potter took second and third places, respectively.

Mayrovich dominated the 100 yard freestlye, winning in a time of 50.32. It was Mayrovich’s best time of the season.

Kuzhil edged out Drury’s Janelle Slattery in the 100 yard backstroke by 0.12 seconds in a time of 57.47.

Herrmann won her second individual event of the evening with a first place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke. Her time of 1:04.12 bested second-place finisher Bunting by 1.6 seconds.

Kansas capped the dual off with a solid victory in the 200 yard freestyle relay. KU’s ‘A’ team, comprised of Kuzhil, Lanteigne, Leidigh and Mayrovich won the event in a solid time of 1:35.46.

Kansas will be back in action tomorrow at Robinson Natatorium at 2 p.m. against Evansville. The dual will be Kansas’ last home dual of 2008.
