Mayrovich Named Big 12 Swimmer of the Week

IRVING, Texas – Maria Mayrovich of the <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Kansas swimming and diving team was named the Big 12 Swimmer of the Week, it was announced by the Big 12 Thursday. <?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Mayrovich, a junior from Novorossiysk, Russia, received the accolade from the Big 12 Conference for the week of November 5. The voting period spanned from Oct. 22 to Nov. 5. Votes were cast by all Big 12 swimming and diving head coaches. Coaches could not vote on their respective nominated swimmers or divers. During the time period, Kansas competed in three dual meets in Lawrence, Kan., against Missouri, Arkansas and Nebraska-Omaha, respectively.

In the dual against Missouri Oct. 26, Mayrovich captured four victories, her 200-yard free (1:48.85) a new Robinson Natatorium record, career-best time and a KU all-time performance. In action against Arkansas Nov. 1, Mayrovich additionally recorded four first-place finishes against the Lady Razorbacks. Her time of 50.25 in the 100-yard freestyle broke her second Robinson Natatorium record. Mayrovich was also a member of both winning relays against Missouri and Arkansas.

“The whole swimming and diving program is excited for Maria,” Kansas head coach Clark Campbell said. “She has had a great run of meets in October and beginning of November. She’s setting up for great 2008 season, which will include the Big 12 Championships, NCAAs and the Olympic Games. This is a great way for her to start preparation for the summer.”

Mayrovich, Campbell and the Jayhawks will take on the Drury University Panthers in a 1 p.m. dual meet competition in Springfield, Mo., this Saturday.
