Kansas Finishes Strong at Head of the Hooch

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.—Kansas rowing sophomore Paige Stephens and junior Cassie Sparks finished first and second in the Novice Single on Sunday at the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, Tenn., marking the highest finish of the weekend for the team in the Jayhawks’ final competition of the fall. The pair finished within ten seconds of each other with Stephens crossing the finish line at 18:51.6 and Sparks finishing at 19:00.7.

“They were the best in their race today,” said head coach Rob Catloth.

Senior Katie Beall followed up her eighth place finish in the Women’s Championship Double on Saturday with a fourth place finish in the Women’s LightWeight Single on Sunday morning while Stacy Rachow finished seventh in the Women’s Championship Single. The senior finished with a time 17:59.5.

“It was a good experience in the atmosphere and at a big regatta,” said Catloth. “Some raced well for us and some didn’t race well for us. It’s all about improvement for throughout the season and getting ready for the spring.”

In the Women’s Open 4x Kansas finished fifth, sixth, and eighth.

On Saturday Seniors Stacy Rachow and Lindsey Lawrence had the best finish of the day on for Kansas Rowing as the pair placed fifth in the Women’s Championship Double.

Fellow Jayhawks Nicole Schneider and Katie Beall also finished in the top 10 placing eighth with a time of 17:40.

In the Women’s Championship Eight Kansas placed 22nd and 26th. The Jayhawks finished 22nd in the Women’s Championship Four.

The Jayhawks will begin the spring season on March 27, 2010 in Austin, Texas against Texas.
