Svistun's Title Caps Day Two of Kitty Harrison Invitational

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — University of Kansas sophomore Yuliana Svistun won the championship of the Carolina singles draw, and two of KU’s doubles tandems advanced to consolation championships matches, marking another successful day for the Jayhawk tennis team at the UNC Kitty Harrison Invitational on Saturday.

Svistun, who earlier this fall won her singles bracket at the Deacon Classic, won matches against Princeton’s Kristen Scott and Marshall’s Anna Volkova en route to earning the title in Carolina draw.

KU’s doubles teams of junior Elizaveta Avdeeva and sophomore Edina Horvath and junior Lauren Hommell and Kunigunda Dorn each advanced to the consolation finals of their draws. Avdeeva and Horvath will compete in the Blue doubles bracket on Sunday, while Hommell and Dorn will play in the Carolina doubles bracket.

The duo of Svistun and junior Stephanie Smith lost in the finals of the Tarheel doubles bracket, 8-5, to Kasztelaniec and Zidek from William& Mary.

In singles play, Avdeeva and Dorn each advanced to the consolation semifinals of the Blue singles bracket.

Also in singles action, after winning her first match of the day in the White singles bracket, Horvath fell in the quarterfinals to North Carolina’s Laura Reichert in an injury defalt..
