Rowers Defeat K-State 14-11

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Kansas closed out the fall season with its second straight Sunflower Showdown victory over KansasState on Saturday at Tuttle Creek Lake Reservoir in Manhattan, Kan. KU defeated the Wildcats 14-11 led by First and Second Varsity Eight victories.

Kansas took the first race of the day to gain an early 5-0 advantage by scoring a victory in the Second Varsity Eight race. Sophomore coxswain Katie Brosious guided the Jayhawk boat to a time of 7:24.0, which finished 6.5 seconds ahead of the K-State boat.

Kansas wrapped up the victory in the next race by scoring eight points in the First Varsity Eight Race. KU came across the wire with a time of 7:14.3, while K-State had a time of 7:18.9.

Kansas State took the next three races to close the gap to 13-11 but the Jayhawks won the Third Novice Eight race in a time of 8:02.5 to tack on the team’s final point.

“Today was a good day,” said head coach Rob Catloth. “The water was good for rowing. It is always nice to end your fall season with a victory over your in-state rival. The fall proved to be very beneficial for us and now we know what we have to work on over the winter to get ready for next spring.”
