Postgame Quotes

Kansas 2, Denver 1

NCAA Tournament – Palo Alto, Calif.

Head Coach Mark Francis:

On the game:

“I thought we were a little nervous in the first 20 minutes, but we settled down after the goal. In the second half, I thought we did a better job of competing. But it’s great to get the win, and now we get to keep playing. In the NCAA Tournament anything can happen, so we need to be ready to go on Sunday.”

Junior forward Shannon McCabe:

On the first Kansas goal:

“Towards the beginning of the game, I don’t think we played our game. We gave them a couple of chances early on. But after (Katie Williams) scored the goal, I think it relaxed us and we were able to play our game after that. Getting the goal off the set piece was the turning point in the game.”

On her goal:

“I just took a chance and went at the (defender), because there wasn’t much time left in the half, and it paid off. I went into the game with the mentality of trying to make something happen and trying to take some chances in the attacking third.”

Junior midfielder Monica Dolinsky:

On the intensity of the game:

“There was definitely a different feeling than a regular season game. I think there’s more pressure on you to perform, because it’s the NCAA Tournament. But when you look at the big picture, it is just another game and we know we can compete if we play our game.”

On the first KU goal turning the tides:

“It was a really big goal since the beginning of the game was a little hectic. It was kind of a shot to the heart of the Denver team.”

On what she was trying to do on her corner kick:
“Their goalkeeper (Mackenzie Snyder) was tall, but I know where Katie Jo (Williams) likes to be on corner kicks. I just tried to play it to that spot, and she finished it.”
