Kansas Baseball Packs Health Kits for Dominican Republic

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Nearly one month before leaving for its foreign tour of the Dominican Republic, Kansas baseball got an early jump on things by packing health kits for the less fortunate Wednesday afternoon.
Members of the Jayhawk baseball team got together in Hadl Auditorium and broke into groups that packed more than 1,000 kits in less than 40 minutes. Kits included tooth brushes, tooth paste, soap and a comb along with a couple of hand towels, which the student-athletes will deliver to homes in the Sugar Cane Village of the Dominican Republic during their trip next month.
“All of these guys came together and they were functioning like a machine,” said Tim Schlosser, KU Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development and Leadership Training. “To be able to do 1,000 health kits in 40 minutes is extraordinary. We’re really lucky and really blessed to have such great athletes.”
Kansas will head to the Dominican Republic on Dec. 15. The purpose of the trip is two-fold: the experience of playing games against Kansas City Royals’ and Cleveland Indians’ developmental teams and also to help provide for those in need. The Jayhawks are scheduled to hold skills camps for youth in the area, visit local orphanages and serve meals to the homeless during their December trip.
“It was a great opportunity to come together as a team and help all of these families,” said Kansas senior shortstop Kevin Kuntz. “It’ll be a fun, exciting trip to go over there, not only to play baseball, but to help those that are in need.”
