Four Jayhawks Named Academic All-Big 12

Four University of Kansas volleyball players were among the 61 student-athletes named to the 2005 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Team by the league office Tuesday. Senior Paula Caten, juniors Jana Correa and Jamie Mathewson and sophomore Emily Brown were honored for achieving a 3.2 or better cumulative grade point average.

Correa and Mathewson earned the honor as sophomores in 2004 while Brown and Caten are first-time recipients. On Thursday, Caten was named 2005 ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic First Team All-District for her efforts on the court and in the classroom. The 6-3 outside hitter is one of just three Big 12 volleyball players to achieve a 4.00 GPA this season.

Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and media relations offices, the volleyball academic all-league squad consisted of 52 first team members combined with nine on the second team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or in each of the two previous semesters while participating in 60 percent of her team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.

Kansas (15-11, 7-10 Big 12) will face Texas A&M Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in College Station, Texas.
