LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Despite 22 points from freshman Darrell Arthur and a career-high 12 rebounds from sophomore Julian Wright, the University of Kansas men’s basketball team (1-1) lost to Oral Roberts (1-1), 78-71, Wednesday night at Allen Fieldhouse. Golden Eagles guard Marchello Vealy scored 22 points on 7-of-8 shooting from three-point range and senior forward Caleb Green added 20 points and 11 rebounds in the victory.

In addition to his game-high 22 points, Arthur added five rebounds and was 10-of-16 shooting from the field. Sophomores Brandon Rush and Mario Chalmers scored 14 points and 13 points, respectively. Junior Darnell Jackson registered a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, six offensive, in the defeat.

The Golden Eagles were lethal from beyond the arc, connecting on 11-of-19 three-point shots. Oral Roberts led for nearly the entire game, with its largest lead of 11 points coming with just over nine minutes remaining in the second half. Oral Roberts forced 19 Kansas turnovers and held the Jayhawks to 43 percent shooting from the field and 20 percent shooting from three-point land.

Kansas outscored Oral Roberts, 42-16, in the paint and managed eight fastbreak points to the Golden Eagles’ two. However, KU had trouble converting its free-throw attempts, shooting 11-of-21 from the charity stripe, and its 19 turnovers translated into 21 points for the Golden Eagles.

Wright added a career-high five blocks to his stat line and junior Russell Robinson chipped in with six points, six rebounds and six assists.

The Jayhawks look to rebound against Towson Sunday night at Allen Fieldhouse as part of the opening round of the Las Vegas Invitational. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m.
