Women's Basketball Completes 2009-10 Signing Class with Monica Engelman and Tania Jackson

Nov. 17, 2008

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas women’s basketball head coach Bonnie Henrickson announced the signing of two players Monday, bringing the class total to five players. A guard from San Antonio, Texas, Monica Engelman (Madison High School) and a forward from Lawrence, Tania Jackson (Lawrence High School) signed national letters of intent to join the KU program beginning in the 2009-10 academic year.

“I am pleased to complete this class with two players who are both a great fit for our program,” said Henrickson, who in her fifth season as head coach of Kansas. “With Monica and Tania we are getting a quality perimeter player and a 6-foot-3 player who can play multiple positions.”

Engelman was the first of the five 2009-10 signees to commit to play for the Jayhawks as she gave Henrickson her verbal agreement back in June after attending the Kansas Elite Camp. The 5-foot-10 guard earned second team All-State honors by Texas Basketball Magazine as well as first team All-District and TABC All-Region honors following her junior season. She was also honored by Rise Magazine as an All-Area selection. Engelman averaged 15.8 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 2.4 assists per game last season, playing for Tracy Hastings at MHS.

“Monica has great play-making ability,” said Henrickson. “She is a great passer in transition and in the half-court game. She can get to the rim to score or pull-up and make a jumper.”

Jackson, who will miss her senior season at LHS after recently suffering a torn ACL, helped lead the Lady Lions to the Class 6A state title last season. Jackson averaged 10.0 points and 7.0 rebounds as a junior, on her way to earning Honorable Mention All-State honors by both the Kansas City Star and the Topeka Capitol Journal. Jackson, who is coached by Kristin Mallory at LHS, chose Kansas over Missouri, Missouri State, Michigan, Cincinnati and Wichita State.

“Tania shoots the three and can post up,” said Henrickson. “She is a tremendous rebounder on both ends of the floor. She possesses the speed, size and athleticism to be successful in the Big 12.”

Kansas, who won its season-opener 106-64 over Sacred Heart on Friday, will host Iowa on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 11 a.m., in Allen Fieldhouse. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN as part of its 24 Hours of College Basketball promotion. Jayhawk Sports Marketing will host Lawrence School Day as local students in grades 3-6 will be brought in to attend the game and an educational seminar hosted by Kansas Athletics.
