LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas football team sported black jerseys for the first time in school history and came out inspired to send its senior class out on a high note, but Iowa State used a 28-point second quarter to stifle the Jayhawks’ intentions and posted a 51-23 Big 12 Conference road victory at Memorial Stadium Saturday night.

The Jayhawks (1-10 overall, 0-8 in the Big 12) unveiled the non-traditional jerseys, along with white helmets showcasing the Jayhawk logo, as the team entered the stadium prior to the coin toss. Iowa State improved to 6-5 overall and 3-5 in league play with the win.

After exchanging lost fumbles on the first two drives of the game, Kansas and Iowa State’s offenses got in sync and traded scores throughout the remainder of the first quarter. Following Michael Cummings’ fumble on KU’s first drive of the game, Iowa State regained possession at the KU 27-yard line. ISU was forced to settle for a 47-yard field goal from Edwin Arceo to take the early, 3-0, lead.

On the following drive, Kansas used its ground game to counter, as the Jayhawk running back stable of Taylor Cox, James Sims and Tony Pierson combined to advance the ball 40 yards to the Iowa State 35-yard line. Cummings turned to the passing game and completed a pair of passes to Cox (17 yards) and Sims (16 yards) to get KU to the 2-yard line, before Cox punched it in for his third touchdown of the season and a 7-3 KU lead.

Iowa State used a 10-play, 89-yard scoring drive to regain the lead, 10-7. ISU’s Jeff Woody ran up the middle 11 yards for the touchdown to cap a drive that was highlighted by the 30-yard pass from Sam Richardson to Josh Lenz. The Cyclone lead was once again short-lived, as on the first play of the second quarter, KU’s Pierson faked the reverse handoff and headed up field on a 55-yard touchdown run for a 14-10 KU advantage.

KU’s start to the second quarter was not an accurate glimpse into the remainder of the period for the Jayhawk offense. Outside of Pierson’s 55-yard run, Kansas gained 19 additional yards of offense on its next four second-quarter drives, which ended with three punts and a lost a possession on a Sims fumble – his first lost fumble since playing the Cyclones on the road a year ago. Sims finished with 81 rushing yards on 20 carries, ending his six-game, 100-yard rushing streak.

Iowa State, on the other hand, scored touchdowns on four-straight drives for 28 unanswered points, totaled 228 yards of offense in the quarter and took a 38-14 lead. With 1:01 left in the first half, Kansas’ Dayne Crist led the offense on a 72-yard drive that ended with a 21-yard field goal by Nick Prolago to end the half and the Cyclones’ scoring run.

The scoring slowed down in the third quarter, as Iowa State was the only team to light the scoreboard after Arceo belted a 51-yard field goal with 1:35 left in the period to take a 41-17 lead. Pierson fueled the KU offense once again to open a quarter, as he hauled in a 37-yard touchdown pass from Crist on the third play of the fourth quarter to make the score, 41-23. Pierson finished the game with 110 yards of total offense (73 rushing, 37 receiving).

Iowa State added to its point total on the ensuing drive, as Richardson tossed his fourth touchdown pass with a 14-yard strike to Lenz for the 48-23 advantage. Richardson threw for 250 yards on 23-for-37 passing, as the Cyclones finished with 548 yards of total offense to Kansas’ 441. Arceo chipped in his third field goal, another 47-yarder, with 8:19 left in the game to put ISU up 51-23, as Iowa State scored his highest-point total in the 92-game series between the two schools.

Kansas will be off next week before ending its regular-season on Dec. 1 at West Virginia.
