Swimming and Diving in Fourth After Nike Cup Day One

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Kansas swimming and diving team is in fourth place after one day of competition at the Nike Cup in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Jayhawks recorded 161 team points and trail third-place Virginia Tech by 17.5 points. Six events, including the one-meter diving competition, took place on the first day of the three-day meet.

Kansas’ day was highlighted by four second place finishes. Senior Amy Gruber finished second individually in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.99. Her time was the fastest 50 free time recorded by a Jayhawk this season and was also an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Junior Gina Gnatzig grabbed a second place finish in the 500 freestyle event with a time of 4:52.60, which also is an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Gnatzig teamed up with seniors Aly Colver and Miranda Isaac and freshman Anne Liggett to finish second in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:34.06. In the 400 medley relay, Isaac and Liggett, along with senior Becca Zarazan and sophomore Jenny Short wrapped up Kansas’ fourth second place finish of the day with a time of 3:46.60.

“Tonight was a night of second place finishes for us,” head coach Clark Campbell said. “We had tremendous individual performances from Amy Gruber and Gina Gnatzig. Amy’s time in the 50 free was the eighth-fastest time in the country this year. We were also pleased with how well our relay teams did tonight.”

In one-meter diving competition, sophomore Shelby Noonan finished in fifth place with a score of 249.55. Sophomore Jenny Roberts took home eighth place with a score of 215.65.

“Shelby Noonan and Jenny Roberts did a great job off the boards and gave us some team points with their performances,” Campbell said. “It was a really good first day for Kansas at the Nike Cup.”

The Jayhawks will be compete at Day Two of the Nike Cup, Friday, starting with the morning preliminary events at 10 a.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C.
