LAWRENCE, Kan. – Behind 22 points and nine rebounds from national player of year candidate Carolyn Davis, the No. 25-ranked Kansas women’s basketball team powered through an early deficit against Wake Forest to come away with a 64-58 win Sunday afternoon in Allen Fieldhouse.

Senior guard Angel Goodrich added 13 points and three assists, while junior forward Tania Jackson contributed 11 points and nine rebounds on the day.

Kansas (3-0) shot 75 percent from the free throw line to aid in the win, while Wake Forest suffered its first defeat and fell to 2-1 on the year. The Jayhawks scored 36 of their points in the paint as well as 15 off of turnovers.

KU opened the game with a 12-3 run over the first 6:40 of the contest. In her first start of the season and 12th of her career, Jackson scored six of KU’s first 10 points and grabbed three defensive boards within the first 10 minutes of the game.

The Demon Deacons responded with an 18-4 run over the final 7:31 of the first half to give them 27-24 lead at intermission. Six different players contributed points during the run and with Dearica Hamby and Mykala Walker combining for 15 points. The Jayhawks were held to zero field goals in the last 8:09 of the half.

Davis powered KU into the second half with 11 points, while Goodrich added four to give the Jayhawks a 39-37 lead. The two teams exchanged the lead four times, but Kansas continued to gain momentum throughout the half to increase its lead to 52-47 with 4:08 remaining.

With 2:24 to play, the Demon Deacons claimed the lead on a three pointer by Chelsea Douglas. The Jayhawks responded with a layup and free throw from Davis to regain their lead, 55-54, at the 1:57 mark.

In the last minute of play, Goodrich cashed in a jumper and a pair of free throws while sophomore guard Natalie Knight stole the ball from Douglas for a fast break layup to put Kansas ahead for good.

KU is in action again Friday, Nov. 23 when Alabama A&M travels to Allen Fieldhouse. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised by Knology Channel 6.
