LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas men’s golf added a fourth signee to head coach Jamie Bermel’s first recruiting class as Connor Peck signed a Grant in Aid to continue his education and golf career with the Jayhawks Monday.
Peck, an Ankeny, Iowa native who will transfer to Kansas from Indian Hills Community College next fall, became the fourth member of Bermel’s inaugural talent haul, joining Chase Hanna (Mission Hills, Kan.), Danny Summers (Leawood, Kan.) and Jacques Wilson (Minnetonka, Minn.). Peck is in his first year of collegiate golf and will be a sophomore at Kansas in 2013-14.
“It’s nice to add Connor to our first class,” Bermel said. “As a freshman in college at Indian Hills Community College I think he brings us an added level of experience and toughness. He’s a very good student and he will come in with a year of college golf. I couldn’t be more excited to get him signed and expect him to have a great career as a Jayhawk.”
Peck had a strong start to fall play for the two-time defending NJCAA National Champions, where he led the Warriors in the team’s first two events and placed in the top-20 in all four fall tournaments. Peck carded a 64 in his first collegiate round en route to a seventh-place finish in a Wichita Shocker Invitational field that included WSU and Kansas State, then used a final-round 67 to help finish as the runner-up at IHCC’s Community First Credit Union Invitational.
Peck was a four-year letterwinner at Ankeny High School where he spent time ranked as the No. 1 golfer in Class 4A and earned Class 4A All-State First Team honors as a junior and senior. Peck was awarded the Herman Sani Scholarship from the Iowa Golf Association.
Last summer, Peck tied for the low round of 68 while hitting all 18 greens in regulation during the final round of the 2012 Iowa Amateur to post a top-10 finish. He used another final-round 68 to close the Northwest Iowa Amateur with a four-shot win just one week later.
Previously, he claimed a sixth-place finish at the 2011 Midwest Junior Players Championship (AJGA event) and an 11th-place finish at the AJGA Junior at Quad Cities. Peck graduated from Ankeny High with honors.
Kansas posted top-five finishes in two of the last three events of the fall slate and saw senior Chris Gilbert earn the individual title at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate Oct. 23. The Jayhawks are scheduled to play in six regular season events in the spring, starting Feb. 22 at the University of Wyoming Desert Classic in Palm Desert, Calif., and culminating with the Big 12 Championship (April 22-24) at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
