Cornish Named AT&T Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week

Nov. 20, 2006

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Kansas senior running back Jon Cornish was named AT&T Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in KU’s 39-20 victory over Kansas State on Nov. 18. Cornish collected a career-best 201 yards rushing in the Sunflower Showdown and scored two touchdowns as he moved up the charts on KU’s single-season rushing list. The New Westminster, B.C. native currently ranks third on KU’s all-time single-season rushing list with 1,331 yards, trailing only Tony Sands (1,442 yards in 1991) and June Henley (1,349 yards in 1996).

Cornish’s 201-yard performance marked the first time since the 2001 season that a KU player rushed for more than 200 yards in a contest. His rushing yards against the Wildcats are the most by an individual in Big 12 play this season. Cornish has rushed for 100 or more yards on seven different occasions during the year.

Oklahoma’s Reggie Smith was named the defensive player of the week while teammate Joaquin Iglesias captured special teams honors. The winners of the weekly awards are selected by a panel of media members who cover the Big 12 Conference.
