LAWRENCE, Kan. – Fourth-year head coach Megan Smith announced the six future Jayhawks who signed National Letters of Intent that comprise the 2013 Kansas softball signing class. In the conclusion of the six-part series, KUathletics.com highlights Sophia Templin.

A three-time letterwinner at De Soto High School under coach Junelle Woolery, Templin is the only pitcher in the 2013 class. Templin was voted the Rookie of the Year and helped her team finish as the Regional runner-up during her freshman year. The Wildcats went on to win back-to-back Frontier League Championships in 2011 and 2012. After her sophomore season, Templin was named a First Team All-League pitcher and the Team MVP in 2011. Last season, she earned All-Area Player of the Year honors while leading DSHS to a state runner-up finish.

“Sophia is one of those finesse pitchers,” Smith said. “She doesn’t throw extremely hard, but she spins the ball and locates it extremely well, which frustrates batters. That is something that you have to do at this level. It’s one thing to have speed, but if you are not moving the ball, changing speeds and spotting locations, you’re going to struggle.”

At the club level, Temple also plays for the Kansas Gold for coach Mark Ingle. Last summer, she went 23-8 in 179 innings pitched. She collected 100 strikeouts and 39 walks over the summer with a 2.39 ERA.

Always involved, Templin is the editor of her school newspaper, senior class secretary, madrigal choir secretary and was chosen to be a Youth Delegate representing the Girl Scouts at the 56th Commission on the Stat of Women at the United Nations in New York.

The daughter of Roger and Mitra Templin, both graduates of Kansas, Sophia plans to major in strategic communications.
