Volleyball To Play Final Big 12 Road Match

LUBBOCK, Texas – With just a couple of regular-season matches remaining, Kansas looks to keep its postseason hopes alive Wednesday as it travels to Texas Tech for its final Big 12 road contest of the season. The Jayhawks (16-11, 7-11 Big 12) and Lady Raiders (10-14, 6-12) will square off at 7 p.m. at United Spirit Arena in Lubbock.

Texas Tech Preview
The Lady Raiders are coming off a big 3-2 win at Kansas State on Saturday, their first win this season over a ranked opponent and first win against Kansas State in Manhattan in school history. Kelly Johnson led Texas Tech with 33 kills (70 attempts) against the Wildcats and for her efforts was named Big 12 Player of the Week by the league office.

Johnson, Daneen Grisham and Laura Grote will be honored in a Senior Day ceremony prior to Wednesday’s match.

The Kansas/Texas Tech Series
Texas Tech leads the all-time series 12-6, but KU has won the last three meetings, dating back to Oct. 4, 2003.

The Last Time KU & Tech Met…
LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 21 Kansas notched a season-high 71 digs as it swept Texas Tech for its first Big 12 Conference win of the season Sept. 22 at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center. The Jayhawks defeated the Lady Raiders 30-24, 30-23 and 30-20.

Josi Lima led KU with 14 kills in 27 attempts and added 14 digs and two block solos in the win. Jill Dorsey posted match-high 19 digs for a total of four Jayhawks in double-digit digs.

Ashley Michaels added 13 kills (.375 hitting percentage) and combined with Andi Rozum for seven block assists each. Rozum led all players with 39 assists and put down six kills in the victory.

Emily Brown added 13 digs and 10 kills while Paula Caten had 10 digs of her own. KU hit .236 on the night and held the Lady Raiders to just a .071 hitting percentage.

As a team, KU posted 13.0 blocks to Tech’s 10.0 and out-dug them 71-37. The 71 digs were the most in a three-game match since the Jayhawks tallied 72 against Morehead State on Sept. 6, 2002.

The Lady Raiders were led by Amy Charlebois, who had 10 kills and eight assists.

NCAA Selection Show Sunday
The 2004 NCAA Women’s Volleyball bracket announcement will be at 5:45 p.m. CST Sunday, Nov. 28, on ESPNEWS. Last season, KU earned its first-ever tournament bid after finishing tied for third (13-7) in the Big 12 Conference. Six Big 12 teams received bids in 2003 — Nebraska, Kansas State, Kansas, Missouri, Colorado and Texas A&M.

Michaels Latest Jayhawk To Join 1,000 Club
With her 10 kills against Texas A&M last week, senior middle blocker Ashley Michaels became the third Jayhawk this season to join Kansas volleyball’s 1,000 club. Michaels is just the eighth Jayhawk in school history to collect 1,000 kills in a career.

Sweep or Be Swept
Last season, Kansas played a grueling 12 of their 28 matches to five games. In 2004, 18 of the Jayhawks’ 27 matches have been played to just three games. KU is 12-6 in three-gamers this season including 6-6 in Big 12 action.
