Henrickson Wins 300th; Jayhawks Defeat Bulldogs

LAWRENCE, Kan.– Kansas head coach Bonnie Henrickson recorded her 300th career win and senior Carolyn Davis scored 19 points to move up the Jayhawk career scoring list as Kansas women’s basketball defeated Alabama A&M 76-59 in Allen Fieldhouse Friday evening. Davis is now 12th all-time in scoring with 1,388 points in her career.

Davis led all scorers with 19 points on the night while grabbing four rebounds in 20 minutes. Fellow senior Angel Goodrich added 15 points and dished out eight assists, a season high.

Kansas and Alabama A&M traded baskets to start the second half with the Lady Bulldogs closing the Jayhawk advantage to eight just three minutes into the half. Davis scored eight of Kansas’ first 14 points in the half to help the Jayhawks to a 57-44 lead with 13:51 remaining to play, but the Lady Bulldogs answered with a 7-4 run over the next 2:57 to pull back within 10.

After two consecutive Kansas defensive stops, sophomore guard Natalie Knight swished a three pointer to give Kansas a 17-point lead with 3:12 remaining in the second half. NeDra Robertson answered for the Lady Bulldogs with a jumper before Kansas freshman Lamaria Cole drove through the lane to hit an open CeCe Harper to record the first assist of her career and put Kansas up 17 points for good.

Robertson led Alabama A&M with 12 points and eight rebounds on the night. Shundray Davis and Ebony Johnson each added 11 points for the Bulldogs.

Kansas’ 76 points are the team’s most scored so far this season while Alabama A&M’s 59 are also the most points the No. 22 Jayhawks have given up in 2012-13.

After missing its first bucket of the night, Kansas went on a 9-2 scoring run over the first three minutes of the first half. The Lady Bulldogs countered with an 8-3 run over the next 3:36 before the Jayhawks were able to open a 28-18 lead at the 6:26 mark behind two Goodrich free throws. Following a quick two-point answer from Alabama A&M’s Robertson, Goodrich excited the crowd with a no-look pass to Harper to put Kansas back up 10.

The two teams continued to trade baskets for the rest of the first 20 minutes with the Lady Bulldogs pulling within six points at the final media timeout of the first half. Goodrich knocked down Kansas’ only three-pointer of the first half while Davis added a baseline jumper and the front end of two free throws to push Kansas to its highest first-half point total of the season with 40 points. Alabama A&M’s 31 were also the most given up by KU in the first half this season.

The Jayhawks shot 50 percent (16-of-32) from the field, their best first-half shooting percentage this season, while holding Alabama A&M to 46.7 percent (14-of-30). It marked the fourth-straight game that Kansas has held its opponent to under 50 percent shooting in the first half.

Kansas returns to action when the Jayhawks travel to Omaha, Neb., Sunday, Nov. 25 to face Creighton at 2 p.m.
