#18/23 Kansas Takes On #9/10 Xavier At Junkanoo Jam

OPENING TIP

No. 18/23 Kansas will face its first ranked opponent of the season as the Jayhawks take on No. 9/10 Xavier in the opening round of play at the 2009 Junkanoo Jam in Freeport, Bahamas. KU and Xavier will tip-off at 3:30 p.m. (CT), at the Freeport YMCA. TCU and Minnesota are the other two teams in the Freeport Division of the tournament. FAST BREAKS

-Bonnie Henrickson has the Jayhawks 3-0 on the season for the third time in her six seasons at Kansas. A win over Xavier would give KU a 4-0 mark under Henrickson for the second-consecutive season.

-The Jayhawks have two 1,000 point-scorers on their roster as senior guard-forward Danielle McCray (1,697) and Sade Morris (1,002) have each joined the prestigious 1,000 Point Club.

-KU has had three different players score 20 or more points in a game this season as senior guard-forward Danielle McCray (27 vs. Oral Roberts; 20 vs. Iowa), senior guard Sade Morris (26 vs. Michigan) and sophomore forward Aishah Sutherland (24 vs. Oral Roberts) have each accomplished the feat.

-Kansas sophomore Aishah Sutherland collected her second double-double of the season and third of her career with 12 points and 11 boards in KU’s win over Michigan. Sutherland posted identical numbers in the Jayhawks’ win at Iowa.

-KU redshirt freshman point guard Angel Goodrich is averaging 9.0 points and 7.0 assists per game through the Jayhawks’ first two games. Goodrich ranks second in the Big 12 in assists.

-The Jayhawks will dress out 13 players as senior forward Porscha Weddington is out with mono and freshman forward Tania Jackson is taking a redshirt this season. Weddington is expected to miss two weeks of action while she recovers.

A LOOK AT XAVIER

No. 9/10 Xavier is off to a perfect 3-0 start on the season after picking up wins over Southern California, Arizona State and Mississippi Valley State. A trio of players are averaging a double-double through the first two games of the season for Xavier. Junior forward Amber Harris is turning in 16.0 points and 11.0 rebounds, junior forward Ta’Shia Phillips is contributing 12.0 points and 11.0 boards a game, while senior forward April Phillips is registering 11.0 points and 10.0 caroms per contest. Junior guard Special Jennings is leading the Muskateers in steals and assists with five and eight, respectively. Xavier has connected on 12-of-26 shots from beyond the arc, good for 46.2 percent, while also hitting 22-of-29 from the charity strip, good for 75.9 percent. Xavier is coached by Kevin McGuff who owns a 157-66 record in his eighth season at the helm of the program.

A LOOK AT KANSAS

Kansas, ranked No. 18 in the Associated Press poll and No. 23 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches’ Poll, is off to a 3-0 start with wins over Oral Roberts, Iowa and Michigan. KU is averaging 83.0 points per game and outscoring its opponents by 16.0 points an outing. In addition, the Jayhawks are pulling down 46.0 rebounds a game, 10.3 more than their opponents. Senior guard/forward Danielle McCray is leading the way with 19.3 points and 9.0 boards a game. McCray is shooting 40.7 percent from the field, including 47.1percent from beyond the arc. Sophomore forward Aishah Sutherland is registering 16.0 points and 10.0 caroms per contest. Sutherland leads the Jayhawks in both steals (6) and blocks (4). Junior center Krysten Boogaard is turning in 8.7 boards per game, while also contributing 12.7 tallies an outing. Senior guard Sade Morris is in double figures with 16.0 points per game and became the 21st player in Kansas history to score 1,000 or more career points with her 26-point outing in KU’s win over Michigan. Redshirt freshman guard Angel Goodrich adds 8.5 points per game. Goodrich is also contributing a team-best 7.0 dimes a game. Junior forward Nicollette Smith serves as KU’s sixth-player and contributes 5.3 points and 4.3 boards per game. Smith has knocked down 4-of-13 threes on the season. Kansas is led by sixth year head coach Bonnie Henrickson who owns an 82-79 mark at the helm of the Jayhawk program. Henrickson is 240-141 in her 13th season in the business.

SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION

-Kansas does not have any Ohio natives on its roster, and likewise, Xavier does not have any native Kansans on its roster.

-Kansas senior guard-forward and Xavier junior forward Ta’Shia Phillips were teammates on the 2009 USA Basketball team that participated in the World University Games. McCray and Phillips joined forced to guide the US to the gold medal in Belgrade, Serbia.

-The Jayhawks and Muskateers will share two common opponents this season in Michigan and Missouri.
