Post-Game Quotes

Kansas Head Coach Bonnie Henrickson
On the game:
“We are learning to be pretty good defensively and the offense will come. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the way our kids played defensively. We really felt like we got to the shooter’s legs in the second half. I thought our perimeter players did a nice job and I thought Crystal (Kemp) did a nice job offensively. Taylor (McIntosh) also gave a nice effort. Offensively, we are disappointed, but when we run things and execute, good things happen.”

On Crystal Kemp:
“We tried to get her to baseline pivot. There is one side of the court where she is comfortable and one side where she is not. She was stronger and we tried to get Taylor(McIntosh) to cut to the basket and get Crystal to at least be in a good rebounding position.

On Crystal Kemp’s three steals:
“I thought she got in their passing lanes, and I thought her defensive position was good. She gets some defections, even if she only got three (steals), she had four or five deflections that led to someone else’s steal. That’s just keeping your feet alive.

On busy schedule:
“We probably need more practice on the offensive side, but we are excited about playing at home. Our practices have been good and we use every minute of our twenty hours per week. We get the most out of our kids that we can.”
Junior Guard Erica Hallman
On the win:
“It makes me feel good. Even though I didn’t make many of my shots, my teammates did and we did a pretty good job of getting them the ball. On defense, I felt that if I wasn’t the one scoring it was my job to stop the other team from scoring.”

On UMKC’s Katie Houlehan and Sammi Knapic:
“They (UMKC) have two really good players in numbers 11 and 3. Number 11 (Houlehan) got open and had some good shots but we did a really good job with number three (Knapic) and held her to just two points. That was really big especially because their offense is run through those two players.”

Junior Forward Crystal Kemp
On the game:
“Today, I was really blown away by our defense. We went out there and we were ready to play. For our defense, it was a matter of where the ball was going and who the shooters were. It was a matter of shutting down their main offensive scorers.”

On upcoming games:
“We have two games back-to-back here next week. We have to be smart about our health conditions and once again have to bring this momentum back to the court on Tuesday.”

Freshman Forward Taylor McIntosh
On her rebounding:
“I wasn’t scoring so I knew I had to rebound and play hard defensively and I finished with 13 rebounds. Rebounding is what we work on in practice and our hard work is bound to show up in games.”

UMKC Head Coach Bo Overton
On Kansas’ play:
“Kansas just made the big plays. When it was time for someone to step up and make a play or make a three at the end of the shot clock, I thought they did. I’m really impressed with their team. They play hard and took us out of a lot of the things we were trying to do and I really like the way they are playing.”

On the beginning of the game:
“We got good shots early. We were able to get out in transition a few times which got us some easy shots, but we didn’t get any easy shots the rest of the game. You have to give it to Kansas for not letting us have those (scoring opportunities).”

On the second half:
“Every time there was a chance to make a play, they (Kansas) made it. That was the difference in the game. When it was time to make a shot they did it, when it was time to get a rebound, they did it. That is something that we are going to have to be able to do. We have to be a little tougher and just make some plays.”
