Johannessen Continues to Impress in Norway

HARSTAD, Norway –

Kansas freshman swimmer Monica Johannessen finished the third day of the Junior Norwegian Championships with two silver medals and one bronze medal on Saturday in Harstad, Norway. Her performance in the Championships so far have earned her a spot on the Norwegian Senior National Team.

“Today was a special day for Monica,” Kansas Head Coach Clark Campbell said. “In addition to keeping the momentum of a great meet going, she was named to the Norwegian National Team based on this week’s performances. It is a tribute to her hard work and determination. We could not be more thrilled for her. This puts her in a position to represent Norway at the 2010 European Championships.”

The native of Haugesund, Norway placed second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.98 seconds. In her other individual event, Johannessen earned third place in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:02.96.

The Kansas freshman also helped her 400 medley relay team secure a second place finish with a time of 1:00.52 in her 100 butterfly split.

Through the first three days of the competition, Johannessen has had an impressive outing, recording two first place, five second place and one third place finish in eight events.
