Winchell's Three-Pointers Give Memphis 58-55 Victory

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Senior Alex Winchell knocked down two clutch three-pointers in the final minute of the game to give Memphis a 58-55 victory over North Dakota State in each team’s final game of the Basketball Travelers, Inc., Tip-Off Classic. Winchell finished the game with a team-high 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting from three-point range.

Memphis improved its record to 4-3 on the season, including 2-1 in the BTI Tip-Off Classic. North Dakota State fell to 3-3 for the year and finished the Classic with a 1-2 mark.

North Dakota State sophomore Danielle DeGagne led all scorers with 16 points. Sophomore Hannah Linz and junior Katie Birkel also posted double-digits for the Bison with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

With 48 seconds remaining in the game, Linz hit a three-pointer to give NDSU a 55-52 lead.

Winchell answered with a three-pointer nine seconds later to tie the game for the 12th and final time. Following a Birkel miss, Winchell hit a transition three-point basket with 10 seconds left to secure the win.

The second half featured nine ties and five lead changes, including four ties and three lead changes in the final four minutes of action.

The game remained close in its entirety. The largest lead of the game for either team was seven, which North Dakota State held with eight minutes left in the first half. Memphis fought back, though, eventually tying the game at 24 with a three-pointer from sophomore Nicole Dickson at the 2:38 mark. Neither team scored the rest of the period, making the halftime score 24-24.
