Diver Shelby Noonan Named Big 12 Co-Diver of the Week

Nov. 30, 2006

LAWRENCE, Kan. – For the first time in her four-year collegiate diving career, Kansas senior diver Shelby Noonan was announced Big 12 Co-Diver of the Week by the Big 12 Conference late Wednesday. Noonan, an integral part of the Kansas diving program, received the accolade based upon her performance at the Terrapin Cup Invitational in College Park, Md., Nov. 16-18, where she placed second on both the one-meter and three-meter board with scores of 255.30 and 275.85, respectively.

Noonan shares the weekly Big 12 honor with peer Tien Tran from Iowa State. Tran finished fifth on the one-meter board with a combined score of 248.25, third on the three-meter with her highest score of 269.05, and eighth on the platform(187.8) at the Minnesota Invitational.

Noonan has led the Jayhawks on the diving front thus far in Kansas’ 2006-07 season campaign, finishing first in the one-meter against Nebraska-Omaha and South Dakota State Oct. 14, as well as against Big 12 rival Missouri on Oct. 27. Noonan was the high point diver in the diving category against the University of Northern Iowa on Nov. 3-4, sweeping the three-meter (323.36), placing second on platform (184.20) and third on the one-meter (251.25).

Big 12 swimmer and diver of the week are chosen by the Conference based upon a vote from each of the Conference’s swim coaches.

“I’m really proud of Shelby. She deserves the honor,” diving coach Eric Elliott said. “Being a senior, she’s been working hard and diving well. She’s focused and that showed this past week. Hopefully it will help her build to (Big 12) Conference.”

Noonan will next be in action following KU’s winter training trip to San Luis Potosi, Mexico, when the Jayhawks take on Big 12 rival Nebraska at 2 p.m. in Lincoln, Neb., Jan. 13, 2007.
