Kansas Swimming Wins Nike Cup, Breaks 11 KAC Natatorium Records

GAMBIER, Ohio – Junior co-captain Danielle Herrmann and junior Maria Mayrovich led the Jayhawks to a Nike Cup victory following the third day of competition at the invitational on the <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>KenyonCollege campus Saturday evening. The Jayhawks finished first with 1090.5 points ahead of the eight teams at the invite, breaking 11 Kenyon Athletic Center Natatorium records in three days of competition. HostKenyonCollege finished second behind the `Hawks (894 points).<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

In Saturday finals action, both the KU 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays were victorious, setting KAC pool records. The 200-yard medley relay, composed of senior co-captain Lauren Bonfe, Herrmann, junior Ashley Leidigh and Mayrovich finished with a time of 1:44.99. Mayrovich, Leidigh, senior Terri Schramka and sophomore Emily Lanteigne clocked in at 3:26.04 in the 400-yard free relay event.

Mayrovich landed KU’s third pool record of the evening, winning the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 49.56.

Herrmann led the way for the Jayhawks in the 200-yard IM with a first-place finish (2:05.68), as well as in the 200-yard breaststroke, where she tapped in at 2:19.45, good for an additional victory. Kansas freshman Joy Bunting and junior Rhynn Malloy rounded out the top-three for KU in the 200 breast event with second (2:21.95) and third-place (2:22.18) finishes. Bunting additionally finished fourth in the 200-yard IM (2:07.69)

Leidigh placed second in the 100-yard butterfly, clocking in at 56.52, while sophomore Carrah Haley and Schramka finished fifth and sixth in the 200-yard back.

In distance freestyle action, Kansas returned four swimmers in the top-six of the 500-yard freestyle finals. Sophomore Ashley Robinson finished second (4:58.49), while Lanteigne, sophomore Alicia Casillas and Schramka finished fourth through sixth.
